Never a Dull Moment

01 July 2019

Bowhouse market in June coincided with Open Farm Sunday, organised by LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) to encourage farms to open up once a year and provide an insight into what happens on farms.
We took this opportunity to bring some of the farm to Bowhouse and with the help of the farm and estate team, were able to do crop and wildlife walks, livestock demonstrations including shearing and have some of the machinery on display. The team involved were delighted to explain more about what they do and the chance to explain what role they have in producing food and delivering wider environmental enhancement.
The role at Balcaskie for the estate team never get boring – This month one of the more peculiar requests came from the organisers of the East Neuk Festival – Jim and his team installed a number of giant washing lines at Kellie Castle as an art installation. Using telegraph pole and rope, the lines carry coloured sheets and the end result looks amazing.
The Royal Highland Show is an annual highlight in the calendar and provides the chance to catch up, learn, make new contacts and look at new ideas. We were delighted to see that one of the regular traders at Bowhouse – Wild Hearth Bakery, won the Bread Championship using flour from Scotland the Bread, made with wheat grown by Balcaskie. Proving that the heritage varieties can hold their own in such competitions.
In preparation for this month’s Bowhouse market, where we will be taking a stall to sell our own beef and lamb, we have been busy organising the process from selecting the livestock to slaughter and planning the butchery list to make sure that we reflect the season for BBQ’s and social gatherings which we hope will appreciate the larger sharing cuts of meat we will be selling.
